The Toxic Issue

I remember hearing this statistic that women who wear lipstick will (on average) ingest around 5lb’s of lipstick. While this statistic is truly hard to swallow (ha ha), and I have yet to see any true research to back this up, we do ingest some of it and where it quite often. Therefore I do believe that it’s important to scrutinize the ingredients of lipstick and lip-gloss. Among of the top toxic offenders in lipsticks to watch out for are:

  • This whole group of artificial colors; RED 33 LAKE/CI 17200, RED 7 LAKE, RED 6 LAKE/CI 15850, YELLOW 5 LAKE/CI 19140, BLUE 1 LAKE/CI 42090, YELLOW 6 LAKE/CI 15985, BISMUTH OXYCHLORIDE/CI 77163, CARMINE/CI 75470, MANGANESE VIOLET/CI 77742, ORANGE 5/CI 45370, RED 21/CI 45380, RED 22 LAKE/CI 45380, RED 27 LAKE/CI 45410, RED 28 LAKE/CI 45410, RED 30 LAKE/CI 73360, RED 36/CI 12085, YELLOW 10 LAKE/CI 47005, RED 40 LAKE/CI 16035
  • OXYBENZONE – BENZOPHENONE-3
  • FRAGRANCE (in the US)  – in EU, check for the source of fragrance
  • BARIUM SULFATE
  • Parabens
  • RETINYL PALMITATE (VITAMIN A PALMITATE)

The Gluten Issue

As gluten information and education has spread, many of us are finding that the foods containing gluten may be a problem. It takes a lot of work to figure out what works in terms of gluten free foods and how to change our diets. One thing that we forget to think about in terms of eliminating gluten is the personal care & beauty aisle.

Many shampoos are made with wheat proteins. While this may not be an issue for some people with gluten intolerance, it can cause problems like itchy scalp for others. The best thing to do is to read the ingredients on every label. I’ve done just that with the lipsticks and found a great variety of brands that are sensitive to the Gluten Free folks like me.
